Grant Hotaling

Grant Hotaling is probably the best ultrarunner you’ve never heard of. Based in Healdsburg, Hotaling is a fixture of the Northern California trail scene, where his quietly dominant performances have earned him course records, race wins, and the deep respect of those who toe the line with him.

Grant started off 2025 with a bang, winning the Marin Ultra Challenge 50K, one of the most competitive and technical races in the Bay Area. He followed it up with a top five finish at the TERREX Lake Sonoma 50 Mile, a race notorious for its relentless climbs and national-caliber field.

In the last four years, Grant has become a fixture in the elite runner field, with wins at the Tahoe Rim Trail 100 Mile (2021 and 2024), the Mendocino Coast 50K (2022, 2023, and 2024), and top ten finishes at the California Classic 100K, Javelina Jundred 100 Mile, Big Alta 50K, and High Lonesome 100 Mile. His versatility across terrain and distance is a hallmark of his racing style.

When he’s not racing, Hotaling runs Treehorn Books, an independent bookstore in Santa Rosa. Trione-Annadel State Park is one of his training grounds, and he remains unsponsored by choice, staying grounded and focused on the personal side of the sport. Known for his humility, he’s the kind of runner who won’t mention he broke a course record unless you ask—and even then, he’ll probably change the subject.
